High school is a lot like a reality TV show if you really think about it.
You are put into close quarters with people that you don’t like. Put into situations that are complex and that you thought you would never be in. You are making connections with people unlike any that you will ever have again. You are doing all of that while going through big life changes, deciding what you want to do with your life and being a part of some of the most dramatic events of your life.
To me, as a reality TV connoisseur, it sounds very familiar. Imagine you’re put on a cast with people you hate in order to create drama and go through events that are very personal only for the drama. It sounds exactly like the plot of a Real Housewives season. Yet, it sounds exactly how we act in high school.
People often regret how they acted in high school just like they think that the Real Housewives are cringe and trashy. However, I think that the drama is exactly what teenagers need to see at this time in our lives.
It helps us understand ourselves and how to act around people that we don’t necessarily like and still be able to work with them. The difference between the Housewives and us is that we have the chance to learn from our mistakes in a safe environment and not have it blasted on everybody’s screen.
So, I guess what I learned is that high school is a mess because we all are.
And that’s okay.
