As the end of the semester inches closer more deadlines and stress are coming up. The Hasa staff decided to take a step back from the present and do a throwback activity: show and tell. I am sure a lot of us remember doing show and tell in preschool or elementary school so it is definitely something that holds a lot of nostalgia. Nostalgia often gives a lot of people comfort in stressful moments of their life which is exactly what the Hasa staff needed.
For show and tell each staff member brought an item from home. The items could be completely at random or something that holds a lot of sentimental value to them. We went around the group showing our item and explaining what it meant to tell. Each item showed a little bit of everyone’s personality which makes show and tell a good icebreaker activity.
As we gathered in a circle we started with Rice Boettcher. Their item of choice was a stuffed animal. It was a Sphinx which is an ancient Egyptian cat. If you know anything about Rice, you would know that they love anything involving history. So of course they had a history lesson revolving around their item, the Sphinx.
Next up was Carley Ladlie, her item was a big shift away from anything normal. Her item of choice was her Covid-19 vaccination card. On the other hand, if you know Carley this is totally something she would think to bring for show and tell. Though she didn’t have much of an explanation on why she chose to bring it.
Next to go was Kae Bee, she also brought a stuffed animal. It was a unicorn panda from her childhood. A stuffed animal that was once hers but now a hand me down to her younger cousins.
Now it was Izzy Mednansky’s turn to share her item of choice which turned out to be a little Spider-Man toy. Izzy was unsure what to bring for show and tell so she grabbed a completely random item from her room.
Without argument the staff could agree that Ryoko’s show&tell item was by far the coolest. She brought a whole case of over 50 little Shopkin pets. For the amount she had, it is clear it had taken many years to collect.
Emma Weckwerth brought her squishy Snoopy pen. There wasn’t much of an explanation on why she chose to bring it for show and tell besides the fact she loves using it even if it means she can’t erase anything she writes even on her stats homework.
Last but not least, I brought my “Twilight” pillow that has both Edward’s face and mine on it. I brought this item because I love it and find it funny that it often scares people. It is also something pretty unpredictable so no one could have guessed what I was bringing.
Show and tell was a time to lighten the stress off our shoulders and give us a chance to step back and share laughs with each other. This is your sign to maybe try an activity that seems a little childish, you might be surprised how much it can lighten your mood.
