The Growl

8 people, 3 cameras, 1 hour. This is all some students have to put together and run a show every day, 5 days a week. This is, The Growl.
Previously known as Tiger Vision, this show gets daily announcements and important information to students and staff every day after 7th hour. The 5 minute show allows students to receive information about what’s going on, and it also gives them a nice break from doing school work. The students that run the show though, spend a lot more than 5 minutes on The Growl.
From the moment the bell rings at the start of 7th hour, students are in the studio fixing spotlights, leveling the sounds, and deciding who will do what for the day. There are 3 anchors, 1 switcher, 1 prompter, 1 sound person, 1 person who runs the cameras, and 1 super (runs the computer with intro and outro video clips.)
“Anchor is by far the most stressful job,” said senior Tucker Akemann.
This is Akemanns second year on the Growl, and he is definitely dedicated to the show.
“I might be making a career out of it,” he said. “Maybe videography or advertising, I’m not really sure.”
There are 2 teams on the Growl, each with 8-12 members. The teams trade off weeks, and every other week is when it is their turn to run the show. On their off-weeks, they brainstorm ideas and make videos for the show.
Senior Nick Olson said, “Making videos is always fun. It’s probably my favorite part.”
Brainstorming and creating videos gives students some freedom to let their inner creativity flow.
Senior Julio Ambriz just joined The Growl this semester, and so far he is enjoying it.
He said, “I joined because my friends wanted me too. It’s a fun class; you get to be really creative.”
The students on The Growl work hard every day to produce the show, but they also have fun at the same time. When in the studio, the students are constantly telling jokes and playing music.
At one point a few students were in the sound room messing with the music, and Akemann responded by saying “Guys, quit before you blow something up.”
Unlike the Ahlahasa and Yearbook, The Growl doesn’t have set staff positions like editor and photographer. The students on The Growl, though, take up natural leadership positions. Everyone knows what needs to be done, and they aren’t afraid to tell each other if something needs to be done differently. The atmosphere in the studio is fun but serious at the same time. Even when they are doing important projects, they are still chatting and thinking up new ideas for videos.
Akemann said, “It’s hard to come up with new ideas, but hard work pays off.
So next time The Growl comes on after 7th hour, just think about how much work is put into the 5 minute show every day. Like The Growl supervisor Mr. Jeffery says before every show, “if you’re not in, you’re out.”
