The Super Bowl of Knowledge

The Super Bowl of Knowledge

Game shows that challenge your intelligence level are quite popular in America. There are all kinds of them from the The Price is Right to deal or no deal. If you’re a fan of these shows maybe this is for you. “It’s a bunch of students who excel in academics,” said senior Caleb Gaudian, he’s been a part of Knowledge Bowl for three years. The Knowledge Bowl is a club like extracurricular activity of small stature, but seems to be growing. The game is competitive among schools in the area who get together and face of in a game of wits. The activity has few matches or events so the ones it does have are quite competitive. “It’s a lot like Jeopardy,” said Gaudian. The team practices once a week with coach Bizjak. Attending all the practices are not required, but the more the better. There are usually 4 competitions a year, once a month from December until March, consisting of many schools in the area. The students form teams of four to five, but schools can have more than one team represent them. Usually the teams have five players and rotate one sitting out each round. In each round the teams get a buzzer, this is a thin red strip that lies across their table. This buzzer is touch sensitive, so in order to ‘buzz in’ any player may touch the strip and it will ‘buzz’ them in. The first team to buzz in gets the first shot at the question. If the team is correct they get a point and the game moves to the next question. If they are wrong they’re out for that question and the question moves on to the team who ‘buzzed in’ second. The rounds consist of 3 oral rounds and 1 written round. In the oral rounds the teams are asked 45 questions out loud. The teams have 15 seconds to hit their buzzer or they forfeit the round. The question can only be asked once, there are no repeats for any question. The final round of the competition is the written round. Each team is issued a test like piece of paper consisting of 60 questions. The team has 60 minutes to complete this test. For each question the team gets right they get a point. The wrong or unanswered questions have no effect. This group is by no means a secret. It has only been around for about 3 years but most of it’s players received invitations from Bizjak. The invitations are letters addressed to you, delivered by the office asking you to be a part of the team, and telling you when the first practice is. Don’t be shy to ask Bizjak or any other member of the team.
