Girl’s Swimming Goes to State

The Albert Lea Tigers sent seven girls to the state swimming competition this year. The girls included were: freshman Kemma Berglund, junior Morgan Field, senior Amy Horejsi and seventh grader Lindsey Horejsi, sophomore Karli Kriewall, junior Whitney Rasmussen and junior Galen Schulz. The girls competed in events ranging from the medley relay to diving, doing well in all. Berglund and Rasmussen were the alternates in the meet, meaning if anyone was unable to compete the alternate would then take their place, in any event.

Berglund was an alternate due to a cast on her right foot. Two weeks before the state meet she tripped and fell over a toy her younger brother had left out, breaking her ankle. Cast, crutches and all, Berglund still attended the meet to help and support her team.

The medley relay is a 50-meter race that has four members of the same team racing together doing four different types of strokes. The strokes are: breast stroke, back stroke, freestyle and butterfly. The teams then compete with who gets the best times, having all four teammates finishing.

The Tiger’s medley relay placed 18th overall. Field took 28th in the 100 meter breast stroke and swam the breast stroke in the medley. Lindsey took 9th in the 100 meter breast stroke and swam the freestyle in the medley. Schulz swam the back stroke in the medley. Amy swam the butterfly stroke in the medley.
