The play has been picked. The cast has been chosen. Rehearsals have started. The spring play is underway.
Director Molly Grimmius chose “The Foreigner” by Larry Shue for this year’s spring play. “The Foreigner” is centered on Charlie, a British man who goes to Georgia to get relief from his hardships in England. Charlie is a shy person, so his friend Froggy tells the people at the bed and breakfast they are staying at that Charlie is an exotic foreigner who speaks no English at all. Knowing this, the rest of the people at this bed a breakfast go about their business, not worrying about what Charlie hears. Soon, Charlie becomes comfortable and helps with the unfolding of the plot in this good guys versus bad guys comedy.
“The good wins in the end, like a good comedy does,” Grimmius said.
Grimmius said her reasoning for picking this play was she saw it and thought it was hilarious. She also said she picked it because she had an idea of which students would audition and figured this would be a good play to do.
Senior Stuart Behling is one of those students. He is playing the role of Charlie. This will be Behling’s fourth year participating in the spring play. He said he actually suggested this play to Grimmius during the production of “The Nerd” which is also written by Larry Shue.
“I love this play,” Behling said. “It’s going to be fun.”
Junior Andy Ehrhardt agreed. Ehrhardt plays Reverend David Marshall Lee.
“I am a two-faced reverend who is a part of the evil plot of the story,” Ehrhardt said.
This is Ehrhardt’s first time being in the spring play at ALHS. He said he thinks it will be a lot of fun and interesting to play the villain.
Grimmius said she is very happy with her cast and who she gave certain parts to.
“After the first read through I was like, ‘they are perfect for their parts,’” Grimmius said. “I’m excited to watch them grow as actors.”
The rest of the cast includes Sergio Salgado (12), Chelsea Petersen (12), Solveig Lange (9), Duncan Kromminga(10) and Ben Jones (11).
The cast will perform “The Foreigner” on April 19, 20 and 21 at 7:30p.m. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults available at the door for purchase.
