FEMALE FARMERS OF AMERICA

The FFA organization gains more girls

The FFA organization is rapidly growing across the country. The Albert Lea High School FFA group started small and has grown to around 70 members today. Not only are there a lot of people in it, the amount of girls has grown, too.

“There are a lot of girls participating this year, it’s really a lot of fun,” Taylor Willis, junior, explained.

In FFA you can do numerous things such as participating in conventions and activities to become a leader or be on a team. Taylor Willis is one of the many girls in FFA this year and has been in it for two years this year and is involved in the meat team as an officer. Last year the FFA organization traveled to Chicago.

“The best decision I made was running for office and joining the team. Now I get to go to places like Kentucky, this year, for the National Convention,” said Willis.

The Career Development Events is the team you chose to join. Such as Willis joined the meat team, you can participate in any team you favor. Boys and girls can be on the same team but boys tend to lean more on the fish and wildlife, whereas the girls like the horse and small animal teams.

You don’t have to be a boy to be in FFA, girls can do all the same things boys can. The FFA group does not always focus on farming, that’s why so many more people joined.

“I didn’t join because I lived on a farm, because I don’t, Mr. Meyer made me want to join, he told me it was based on leadership now rather than farming,” Willis said

Not only is the FFA group fun, it also looks good on a college application and can get you a good scholarship, too. Later in life it can also help you on a job application. You can also earn awards in your FFA team, you receive an award at the banquet they have each year. Last year Willis won an award for having a positive attitude.

“FFA is a good way to make new friends and do something you love doing,” Willis explained, “I really recommend it.”
