Girls’ Soccer Ends Season

Tigers Finish 10-7

Girls’ soccer had easy wins and hard losses.

They ended their season 10-7 with an 0-2 loss to Northfield on Thursday night. On Oct. 13 the clock started at 7 in Northfield for an intense quarterfinal game. Northfield scored in the first half off a corner kick to make it a 0-1 game going into the second half. Although the Tigers had many chances to score, they could not get past the Raider’s defense.

A perfect shot comes from a perfect pass and the assist is just as important as the goal.

In the first round of section play the Tigers (7th seed) beat New Ulm (10th seed) 4-0. Scoring for the Tigers were eighth-grader Lucy Sherman, freshman Turena Schultz, junior Rachel Rehnelt and senior Claire Sherman. Callie Hanson, senior, had multiple assists.

Heading into the postseason Coach Laura Wangen encouraged the girls to have fun, because when you have fun you play like a team, and when you play like a team, you win.

“The victory over Austin on our senior night left our regular season on a high note going into sections,” said captain senior goalkeeper Kathryn Flaherty. Flaherty had six shutouts this season.

Their defense consisted of junior Ella Zelenak, eighth-grader Laura Flaherty, junior Sydney Doran and senior Maddy Funk who allowed minimal shots to get through. Leading scorer was Rehnelt.

“My teammates have been a big factor with my scoring opportunities,” said Rehnelt. “A perfect shot comes from a perfect pass and the assist is just as important as the goal.”

Claire Sherman, Lucy Sherman and freshman Ashley Butt finish out the Tiger offense as forwards.

“Through thick and thin, no matter the competition, our team gave our all and that’s all I could ask for,” Hanson said. “We went out there to play, and we showed that team what we were made of.”
