Tales of the Chronically Confused: Politics

Politics. Yeah, I just said it. That word that makes you want to turn the page. Well, don’t. I promise this isn’t going to be as boring as the rest of the junk you may see.

I’m not going to say who I’m rooting for, but can you #feelthebern in this election yet? It’s filled with opponent bashing and name-calling, prejudiced remarks and childish behavior. Sometimes it makes me wonder; is it even worth it to vote? We’re probably going to end up with either a Republican who wants power for the wrong reasons or Democrat who wants power for the wrong reasons. The 2016 election will be the first time I am legally able to vote. It never seemed like such a big deal as I grew up. Even a year ago, I really didn’t care much, but now that the time is almost here, it seems like such a huge responsibility. The person who gets elected could either make or break our country. To vote or not to vote; it truly is a berning question.

I’ve always had the idea in the back of my mind that voting is stupid and it doesn’t really make a difference like they say it does. Although, I still believe this is partially true, I don’t believe this as strongly as I used to. In case you were unaware, “We the People” did not actually elect George W. Bush to be our President. He won the position of Commander in Chief by what is called the electoral vote. Basically, a bunch of people in the government chose who would be the leader of our nation. A nominee winning the election without winning the popular vote (the vote by us regular citizens) has only occurred four times. It’s kind of a fishy situation, but it’s the way our nation works, and I’ve come to realize we can’t just sit back and let them take control. We must try. We must claim what is ours, and voting is definitely a piece of that. We can’t make a change without speaking up. We have to call them out on their actions and make it clear we have a voice and intend to keep it that way. Make them feel the bern of our fed-up generation!

Now, let’s discuss a few of the candidates. Donald Trump (Republican) is a wealthy businessman who has swept the nation by feeding of it’s inner prejudice. Ted Cruz (Republican) is a senator whom was born in Canada (yet somehow might become Pres.?). John Kasich (Republican) is the Governor of Ohio, who is also Principal Grossklauss’ doppelganger. Hillary Clinton (Democrat) is a former U.S. Secretary of State (under the Obama administration) and wife of former President Bill Clinton. Bernie Sanders (Democrat) is a U.S. senator who is taking the younger generations by storm with his progressive agenda (#feelthebern).

Trump attacks everyone, politician or not. However, he and Cruz have a feud raging due to the fact they are the front-running Republicans in the election. Clinton and Sanders have a major competition in the Democratic field because, quite frankly, they are the only two left-wing candidates most people have even heard of. John Kasich is a pretty peaceful dude; he doesn’t get too caught up in all of the political drama. Trump and Sanders are the only two candidates who haven’t been bought out by big banks or corporations.

Sanders is the only candidate standing up to Monsanto and demanding the labelling of GMOs; this is crucial. I don’t think many people understand the importance of this election. Sure, it would be great to bring some of the factories back to the U.S., but there are far greater issues to deal with; and our lives depend on it. Genetically Modified Organisms, aka GMOs, are plants (and now even some animals) that have been altered at the genetic level. Their DNA has been warped to do things such as produce it’s own pedticides. This causes two life-threatening issues for the human race. First of all, if the plant is producing it’s own pesicide, there is no way to decontaminate the fruit or veggie. We are eating pesticides and other altered DNA that is unnatural. The FDA has let GMOs into our food source without adequite testing or proof of safety; they have also ignored indepedent studies showing GMOs cause cancer. If GMOs are not stopped, we will die.

The second life-threatening aspect of GMOs is that fact that they are rapidly killing off our bees. Without bees around to polinate our crops, the human race (and the rest of planet Earth) only has a few years of life left. If GMOs are not stopped, the bees, thus ourselves, will die.

As funny and entertaing as the election can be, it’s important to remeber what’s really at stake here. If fracking is not stopped, we will run out of poutable water (much quicker than you may think), if police brutality is not stopped, more senseless killings will occur, and if our food sources are not protected, we will not be able to live healthy lives (or live at all). These issues matter. They can’t be swept under the rug and “dealt with later.” These are the issues that need to be dealt with now; they can’t wait. If we don’t confront these problems now, we will never have a chance to. Our lives are depending on this election.

All of that being said, you need to make your own decisions, but please be informed before making them. Every candidate will make promises they can’t keep (for instance, claiming they will make Mexico pay for an $8 billion wall to block out Mexican immigrants) and will pretend to be a perfect person. None of them are exactly as they seem, but you must do the researching on your own and decide who you feel is trustworthy with the task of representing and leading America.
