Remembering Erin Finnegan

On Nov. 17, 2015, Albert Lea High School Speech Pathologist Erin Finnegan died after an extended battle with cancer. Many teachers and staff wore green, or had a clover Post-it note pinned to their shirt the day after her death, in remembrance of her.

Her funeral was Nov. 20, 2015 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin, Minn.

If you asked anyone who knew her or worked closely with Mrs. Finnegan, they would tell you she loved two things: being Irish and the kids of school district 241. She started in 1991 at Brookside Middle School.

Speech Pathologist Jason Fornwald, who is in his second year working at the high school and had previously worked in the elementary schools, worked closely with Finnegan and loved every minute of it. He remembered her infectious spirit and the deep love she had for her job.

“She felt so blessed to be working with the students and staff at Albert Lea High School,” Fornwald said.

In 2009, she was inducted into the Wall of Inspiration for her dedication and love for students, her love of her faith and kindness and generosity.

The mood was always lighter when she walked into the room, sporting her huge smile. Staff remember her as always being happy; there was never a dull day for Ms. Finnegan. Although some of the younger students likely did not have the privilege of meeting Mrs. Finnegan, her legacy and infectious attitude will live on with the staff and those who worked closely with her. She will be remembered for her love of her job and, of course, for being dedicated to her Irish heritage.
