Public Speaking

Public+Speaking

speaking…Everyone’s worst nightmare … including my seventh grade self, I just didn’t know it yet.

Remember those days where we had dodge-ball tournaments at Southwest? Everyone came up with a name and such for each advisory. Well, Mr. Schmitz was my advisor and we came up with the name. He asked our homeroom class if anyone would want see the say our team name to the whole school and so my ignorant & excited self volunteered. Finally the day arrived. The gym is full of 7th and 8th graders and they’re all excited. Each homeroom had a speaker and we were all placed in a line in the middle of the gym where about 300 hundred people or so could see. It was my turn to speak and I took the mic in my hands …my hands began to shake…I could feel the rush of adrenaline go through my system… five seconds of silence…then 15 seconds. I held the mike then I said… “uhh… I forgot” that was a major face-palm moment right there. Luckily, the principal whispered to me “flying squirrels” and I quickly recovered and said “Oh yeah flying squirrels”. I gotta say, I found it really funny and so did the three hundred people in the gym.

Public speaking is a difficult thing but it’s a life skill. We all make mistakes it’s just the matter of practice and learning from those mistakes… I mean I had one job and of course I failed, besides that, learn and experience. The more you practice public speaking, the more you’ll be comfortably with it.
