Randall pursues firefighting dream

Randall+pursues+firefighting+dream

Being thought of as heroes, firefighters risk their lives every day to save lives. Senior Silas Randall’s goal is to become a firefighter. He has been thinking about this for the past two years. He has wanted to be a firefighter since the beginning of his junior year, and he will pursue that goal when he graduates from Albert Lea High School.
To improve his chances at receiving a job offer as soon as he gets done with college, he will be going to get a college degree in nursing. He plans to go to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. for his nursing degree. Randall was debating between Winona State and Oral Roberts University. Oral Roberts has a 100-percent graduation rate for nursing, versus Winona State’s 98-percent, which was the deciding factor.
After four years are done in Tulsa, he wants to fulfill his dream of being a firefighter. He plans to stay near home, but he is not sure where he is going to go.
He wants to become a firefighter because it is such a different job that can benefit a lot of people.
“I want to have a job where I have a team-like bond with the people around me,” Randall said.
He said he doesn’t know anyone else at Albert Lea High School who is interested in becoming a firefighter, and that is another reason why he wants to do it.
Randall said, “Not many people can say ‘hey I am a firefighter!’” In an excited voice, Randall added, “I am the one and only!”
Randall couldn’t think of anyone, or anything, that has inspired him toward this specific career path.
“It’s just a part of me,” he said.
He is just devoted to help out the community by fighting fires and helping people when a disaster strikes. Randall’s older sister Abby has been very supportive of his idea, and she is currently attending at Oral Roberts University and getting her degree for nursing.
“I can’t wait for Silas to join me at college, I know that he will be a great firefighter,” said Abby Randall.
Randall said he is prepared to become a firefighter. He has been taking science classes and other specific courses to help him along on his journey. To be a firefighter, you have to take on many challenges, including irregular hours, having to make on-the-spot decisions and be sensible in a crisis. Randall claims it will be tough, but he is prepared for it.
Life at a fire station can be a little bit more rough than normal because of its long days and tough hours. It can be compared to living in a dorm with a few other people and interrupted by urgent phone calls into action.
Randall is extremely excited to become a firefighter and he looks forward to seeing what is to come in the future.
Abby Randall said, “I’m so proud of Silas for going after his dreams.”
