How do I Christmas?

What are the holidays to you?

There’s nothing more beautiful in the world than waking up at 6:30 on Christmas morning and seeing the way the lights on the tree illuminate the entire room, casting a warm glow over everything and to see the snow glittering in the light casted by the street lights in the dark. It’s the best feeling knowing that it’s just one entire day to spend with family, and of course the presents are always a plus.

Some people celebrate Christmas because it is the day used to celebrate Christ’s birth, others might only like it for the presents. But for me, that’s not what it’s about. To me this holiday is about being able to have an entire day to be with my family, who I don’t get to see every day.

I mean, yeah, at one point in my life it was all about that mad sprint down the hall to see what Santa had brought me that year. But then I grew up. I found out Santa isn’t real—shocker—and that there’s a lot more to be excited about than what new toys or books I received that year.

Things like getting to see my brother or not getting into fights with my sister over stupid little things, like who gets to play video games at that exact moment. And of course one year I tried to make it all about religion and celebrate Christ’s birth, but I quickly found out that it obviously didn’t fit me like it fit others.

It took me a while to figure out what exactly Christmas meant to me. I guess one day I just woke up and it clicked, I realized it wasn’t about the presents or religion. That to me all that mattered that day was to be with my family and spend a day together. To just take a day to enjoy the little things in my life.

So maybe this Christmas you can take a second to simply sit in your living room – or wherever your Christmas tree is – while no one else is awake, with a cup of your preferred warm holiday drink and appreciate the little things, like the people you love in your life.
